The true status of Peter’s readers was that of a holy people belonging to a holy God. In view of their true status, Peter tells his readers to abstain from sinful desires of the flesh. What are these “desires of the flesh”? Also, Peter gives advice about silencing slander.
This week’s passage contains one of my favourite verses in Scripture – 1 Peter 2:16 – which presents an interesting paradox.

Peter encouraged the recipients of his letter by telling them that – like Jesus – they were rejected, selected, precious and living stones. He also referred to them as a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own posession. What is the significance of these wonderful descriptions? [2000 words]

Jesus says that if we love him we will obey his commands (John 14:15). Peter says that love for others is the result of obedience (1 Pet 1:22). Our obedience and love as Christians are profoundly connected and intertwined. Love is both the motive and the goal of our endeavours. [1500 words]

Many Christians believe that submission in marriage is the duty only of wives. These Christians often make a point of saying that the Scriptures never state that husbands are to be submissive to their wives. In the instructions to Christian men in 1 Peter 3:7, however, Peter comes very close.

In 1 Peter 3:1-6 Peter instructs wives to be submissive. He uses the examples of “the holy women of the past” and Sarah to help make his points. Who were these “holy women of the past”? And in what way did Sarah submit to Abraham? [1600 words plus footnotes]

In this week’s passage, Peter writes that in the past it was the prophets who investigated salvation; but in the present it is the angels who are investigating salvation.
Peter also gives several instructions to his readers, including the instruction to “be holy”. This session looks especially at holiness. [1700 words]

“. . . for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed.”

In these few verses Peter reveals that each member of the Trinity has a role in salvation: the Father’s role is choosing, the Holy Spirit’s role is sanctifying, and the Son’s role was to be the redemptive sacrifice. But we have a role too.

Here’s an introduction to 1 Peter looking at who the letter was written by, who the letter was written to, and where the letter was written from.
It also looks at the key theme of 1 Peter – suffering for the being a Christian.
