Mary Kassian, like some other complementarians, does not like the NIV, 2011 edition. Her article, “10 Reasons Why the New NIV is Bad for Women”, has been doing the rounds, but I honestly do not understand her concerns or her arguments.

Mary Kassian recently posted an article on her website entitled “Dora the Doormat: And other Scary Straw Women of Complementarity”. In her article, Kassian discusses caricatures and stereo-types of Complementarian women and explains that these extremes do not fairly represent Complementarian women.
This article is my second critique of Mary Kassian’s article. The first was entitled: “Complementarianism: A Traditional Belief of the Church?”.

Mary Kassian claims that Complementarianism represents the Church’s “traditional, orthodox, historic belief” on gender. (She must be reading different accounts of Church history and tradition to me.)

Some Christians believe that it is only men, and not women, who have been given spiritual authority by God. Yet the Bible contains several accounts where God bypassed husbands and male guardians and spoke to women directly with messages of vital significance. This article will look at a few of these women who received spiritual authority from God; women such as Samson’s mother, Deborah, the Wise Women of Abel Beth Maacah, Huldah, Jeremiah’s wailing women, Mary – the mother of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, Martha and more.

In support of their views of male authority and female submission, Complementarians place a great deal of importance on the creation narrative recorded in Genesis 2:4-25. They believe that there is a divine mandate of male leadership and authority implied in this passage of Scripture, particularly in the creation order of Adam being created first, before Eve.
This article looks at the opening chapters of Mary Kassian’s book, “Women, Creation and the Fall” and argues against the Complementarian ideology that all men are to be leaders and all women are to be submissive to men.
People who hold to Complementarian views include Mark Driscoll, John Piper, and many Sydney Anglicans. As usual, have a look at the endnotes. [2800 words]
