Photo taken in 2012 is of Asia Bibi’s husband and her sister.
I am stunned, saddened, and outraged that Christian woman Asia Bibi has lost her appeal to the High Court in Pakistan and has been condemned to death . . . to death!
Asia has spent five years imprisoned in an 8 by 8 foot room, away from her husband and five children, and away from her home which has been completely vandalised. And now she faces the real and imminent threat of being hanged, and all because she supposedly breached the blasphemy laws in Pakistan, laws which greatly endanger religious minorities such as Christians.
This is how Sister Catherine Wyborne describes the situation on her blog iBenedictines:
This morning, somewhere in Pakistan, Asia Bibi is living with the knowledge that she has been condemned to death by hanging because she refused to convert to Islam when accused under the country’s blasphemy laws. Reports of the case suggest a squabble on the fruit farm which got out of hand. A cup of cold water (how biblical is that!), tempers fraying, an escalation of words on both sides and then a life imperilled. Two politicians who spoke in defence of Asia Bibi have already been murdered and the Government of Pakistan is now in the ‘difficult’ position of upholding a verdict many see as unjust. The trouble is, governments do not care as much about justice as they say they do; and unless some face-saving formula can be found, Asia Bibi will surely die.
Sister Catherine then notes the steadfastness of Asia Bibi and the cowardice and political chicanery of the Pakistani government and judiciary. She has even stronger words for the complacent West. You can read her post here.
Asia is in very real danger; however I believe that God uses our prayers, and I continue to pray for Asia, her family and her country. Please pray too.
Here are a couple of petitions that you can sign and share.
The first petition has been organised by Amnesty International. It is addressed to the Pakistani Prime Ministers and asks for a stay of execution, Asia’s unconditional release and safety, reforms to the blasphemy law, and the abolition of the death penalty.

Another petition which has been organised through change.org is addressed to the Pakistani Supreme Court and simply asks for the acquittal and release of Asia Bibi.

A short post about the hearing in the High Court on the 16th of October is here. Note that “25 Mullah’s were present to apply pressure and push for the [death] sentence.” (A Mullah is a Muslim trained in religious law.)
This article from the Daily Mail provides a good overview of Asia’s case.
An excellent short article entitled 10 Things You Should Know about Asia Bibi from Open Doors USA is here.
